While studying at the Mannes College of Music in New York City in the early 1990s, Qin founded the Rough Assemblage composers' collective, along with Mark De Gli Antoni and Norman Yamada.
In 1961, at the age of eighteen, Knoll won a scholarship from the New Orleans Opera Guild and the Metropolitan Opera Association to study voice at the Mannes College of Music in Greenwich Village in New York City.
He taught music at The Hartt School, Mannes College of Music, Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Longy School of Music.
