Olga Fröbe-Kapteyn

Born in London to a feminist/social activist mother and engineer father, Olga attended the North London Collegiate School, where she was a close friend of Marie Stopes.

Humphrey Verdon Roe, his brother, was co-founder of Avro and also co-founder of the first birth control clinic in Britain with Marie Stopes.

Pauline Devaney

During the 1980s she wrote a one-woman stage play, To Marie with Love, based on the life of Marie Stopes, which she took to the Edinburgh Festival in 1985.

Marie Stopes (1880-1958), Scottish palaeobotanist and pioneer in the field of family planning

Reconnoitered by the New Zealand Antarctic Research Program (NZARP) Allan Hills Expedition, 1964, and named after Marie Stopes, authority on Carboniferous palaeobotany, and hence associated with the geology of the area.


Old Higher Lighthouse

The doctor, pioneer of birth control and Portland Museum founder Marie Stopes owned the lighthouse from 1923 until her death in 1958 where over time some of her visitors included George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells and Thomas Hardy.
