It was Child's last published book before her death in 2004 and was intended as a quick reference for common kitchen techniques rather than a comprehensive cookbook in the manner of 1961's Mastering the Art of French Cooking or 1989's The Way To Cook.
The show grew out of some special presentations that Child did based on the book Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which she had co-authored.

He was Julia Child and Simone Beck's teacher for the bread chapter of Mastering the Art of French Cooking volume 2, as well as an advisor to the Bread Bakers Guild of America during its founding and early competitive efforts in the early 1990s.
