India Aertsens was born to Sabiha Rumani Malik (of a family related to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, one of the foremost leaders of the Indian independence movement and a renowned scholar, and poet).
His house, known as "Dayal Vas" named after his father Har Dayal Singh Saini was known to be the hub and hiding placed of many prominent Indian Freedom Fighters such as Sheel Bhadra Yajee, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sarojini Naidu, Mahavir Tyagi, and many I.N.A heroes such as Dhillon and Sehgal.
He also served on educational committees set up by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, working in close association with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Dr. Zakir Husain, Rao Bahadur Krishnamachari, Honourable Rajkumari Amrit Kaur et al.
