It is normally only a school holiday for all levels, but in 2014 the Mayor of Manila and former President Joseph Estrada, for the first time in the city's history, declared it a special non-working holiday due to the impassability of some thoroughfares and projected congestion in others.

History of Manila

After Mayor Lacson's successful term in the fifties, the city was led by Mayor Antonio Villegas during most of the 60's, and Mayor Ramon Bagatsing for nearly the entire decade of the 70's until the 1986 Edsa revolution, making him the longest serving Mayor of Manila.

José María of Manila

José María was born in Manila, Philippines on 5 September 1880 to Spanish parents Don Eugenio Sanz-Orozco, the last Spanish Mayor of Manila, and Doña Feliza Mortera y Camacho.
