Gaye had recorded several songs for the Midnight Love album but Gaye left the songs from the final track listing as he had yet to finish them.

Estus joined the R&B band Brainstorm as a teenager, recording two albums with them and scoring a hit with "Popcorn." During the early 1980s, he appeared as a session bassist on several mainstream albums, including Marvin Gaye's 1982 comeback album, Midnight Love.
During his stay, the singer composed his hit songs "Sexual Healing" and "Midnight Love." The house he resided in remains an attraction to this day.
Their music video, "Leave Me Alone", appeared on BET's Midnight Love, Cita's World, Hits from the Street, and as a New Joint of the Day on 106 & Park.
