Father Hennepin State Park is located on Highway 27 at the southeast corner of Mille Lacs Lake, one mile (1.6 km) west of Isle.

State Highway 27 serves as an east–west route between Browns Valley, Wheaton, Alexandria, Long Prairie, Little Falls, Mille Lacs Lake, and Moose Lake.
The route continues northbound around the east side of Mille Lacs Lake.

The Battle of Kathio, or Battle of Izatys, was an oral tradition of the Chippewa reporting a battle fought in 1750 between Chippewas and the Sioux at the village of Kathio, or Izatys, on the Rum River next to Mille Lacs Lake.
The U.S. Highway 169 corridor travels from the city of Virginia, Minnesota, along the western edge of Mille Lacs Lake, through the western suburbs of Minneapolis and continues south through Belle Plaine, Mankato, and then into Iowa.
