The northbound bridge was built in 2001, replacing a plate girder bridge that was originally built in 1967 as a two-lane bridge for Minnesota State Highway 101 when the highway was rerouted around Elk River.
The southern terminus of the southern section of State Hwy. 101 ends at the bridge and becomes the northern terminus of Scott County Road 101, intersecting with Scott County Road 69 at the southern end of the bridge.

County Road 101 is a segment of old State Highway 101 turned over to Hennepin County maintenance in segments from County Road 81 to Wayzata in 1988 and from Wayzata to the Carver County line in 1998, where a disjointed southern section of State Highway 101 still exists.
