Wilhelm graduated from Macalester College with a BA in history and began his career in professional sports as general manager of the Minnesota Thunder Pro Soccer Organization, then as a PR/Communications manager at the Seattle Sounders Pro Soccer Organization in 1998.

On August 8, 2008, the Minnesota Thunder announced a trade with the Atlanta Silverbacks, sending Nathan Knox back to the Minnesota Thunder, a team he had played for previously, and Paye going to the Sliverbacks in an even swap, as both are forwards.
After 14 years at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota the Minnesota Thunder moved to James Griffin Stadium.
He played in the youth system for Alemannia Aachen until 2007, when he moved to the United States and joined the Minnesota Thunder.
