Suffering from the Napoleonic blockade of baltic timber, he quickly established a new, North American base for the company, sending his brother James Gilmour, and Alexander Rankin to the Miramichi River (New Brunswick, Canada) in 1812.
Based in the Miramichi River valley, he helped Acadians fleeing the British deportation operations escape to Quebec.
He entered the British government service in 1830 and assigned to the customs department on the Miramichi River, New Brunswick.
Situated on the north bank of the Miramichi River, the former town is sometimes referred to as Miramichi West.

A sport fisherman and conservationist, Bird is Chairman Emeritus of the Miramichi Salmon Association and has been a Director of both the Atlantic Salmon Federation of Canada and Atlantic Salmon Federation of the United States.
It serves principally students from the south side of the Miramichi River, from the smaller communities of Chatham, Loggieville, Chatham Head, Nelson, Barnaby River, and Napan.
