It is bordered by the Morava River in the west (which also forms the border with Austria), Malacky District in the north, the Pezinok and Bratislava III districts in the east, Bratislava I district in the south-east, by a short part of Bratislava V district in the south and again by Austria along the Danube river.
Other rivers nearby are the Morava River, which forms the north-western border of the city and flows into the Danube at Devín, the Little Danube, and the Vydrica, which flows into the Danube at the borough of Karlova Ves.
The Topolná transmitter (Czech: RKS Topolná) is the central longwave broadcasting facility of the Czech Republic situated westward of the village Topolná at the Morava River.
Only a few kilometres of the planned 40-km long channel from Vienna to Angern at the Morava River were actually dug in the years up to 1943, mainly in the areas around the Lobau floodplain in the Donaustadt district of Vienna and the adjacent town of Groß-Enzersdorf.
