Pine Junction is situated in the foothills of the Front Range south of Mount Evans, approximately 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Denver along U.S. Highway 285.
Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1941, Powell put together the Kenyon Cosmic Ray Expedition, and took a cloud chamber to the top of Mount Evans in Colorado.

John Evans is the namesake of Evans Avenue (which bisects the DU campus and runs through the Denver metro area), Mount Evans (a 14,264 foot mountain visible from DU), and the city of Evanston, Illinois (the site of Northwestern University, founded by Evans prior to his founding of DU).
In 1863, the artist Albert Bierstadt asked him to serve as a guide, and he led Bierstadt on an expedition from Idaho Springs, Colorado to the summit of the mountain Bierstadt named Mount Rosalie, later known as Mount Evans.
