Elevations in Virginia vary from sea level to Mount Rogers at 5,729 ft (1,746 m) above sea level, with major gradations occurring at the edges of the Atlantic Ocean, the end of the Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge and Allegheny chains of the Appalachian Mountains.
The line charted a complicated course through the mountains of the area, crossing the Blue Ridge not far from Mount Rogers.

Each year, Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School, Charnwood-Dunlop Primary School and Mount Rogers Scout Group hold the 'Charny Carny', a unique event which is held as the schools' joint fête.
Grayson Highlands State Park adjoins the recreation area, near Mount Rogers, and the park provides the most well known access to the NRA.
