unusual facts about Nan River

Balantiocheilos

The range of B. ambusticauda is listed as including the lower and middle Mekong and Chao Phraya River drainages in mainland Southeast Asia; the original distribution of this species included the Chao Phraya River drainage from Bangkok upriver to the lower Nan River and in the Mekong from Vietnam and the Great Lake (Tonle Sap) to the lower Nam Ngum River.

Marbled whipray

Among the few members of its family restricted to fresh water, the marbled whipray has been reported from Saigon in Vietnam, the Mekong River near Tonle Sap and Phnom Penh in Cambodia, the lower Nan and Chao Phraya Rivers in Thailand, and the Mahakam River in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Nan, Thailand

There is much evidence of prehistoric habitation, but it wasn't until several small mueang united to form Nanthaburi on the Nan river in the mid-14th century - contemporary with the creation of Luang Prabang and the Lan Xang (Million Elephants) kingdom in Laos - that the city became a power to be taken into account.
