McDonald received an Honorable Discharge and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He too, was awarded eight medals including: Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal and the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
His son, Alexander Coucoulas, served in the US Army as a combat engineer in the Far East Command in the early 1950s and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for the Korean War (1950-1954).
Before his appointment to the FDNY, he served in the United States Army in Korea during the Korean War, during which he was decorated with the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
