3 unusual facts about National Gramophonic Society

Donald Tovey

Recordings of Tovey performing on piano were made for the National Gramophonic Society (NGS-114-117) on June 6 and 11, and September 4, 1928, playing Tovey's conjectural completion of Bach's The Art of Fugue, Bach's Sonata No. 2 in A Major BWV1015 (1st mvt), and Beethoven's 10th Violin Sonata in G major, Op. 96) (complete) with violinist Adila Fachiri.

Spencer Dyke Quartet

In October 1923, Compton Mackenzie founded the National Gramophonic Society for the recording and publication by subscription of classical music, principally chamber music, which was of limited circulation.

It is best remembered now for a series of pioneering chamber music recordings made for the National Gramophonic Society.
