Wilkes was a member of the Southwest Rotary International, National Association of Farm Broadcasters, Texas Tech Ex-Students Association, and the National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech.
She served as president of Friends of the Library and the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech from 1986–1987 and was a board member of the National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech from 1983–1985, having worked to develop the "Cowboy Symposium" held there.
