He then retired from UIUC and served as President and Professor of Computer Science at the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Hsinchu, Taiwan from February 1998 to February 2002.
He also received Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation Award in 2008, Rockwell’s Leonardo da Vinci Award (Engineer of the Year) in 1992, National Chiao Tung University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1997, and the National Tsing Hua University Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002.
And the Taiwanese Ni graduated from and worked for the National Tsing Hua University (in Hsinchu, Taiwan), which is the sister university (share the same root) of the Tsinghua University in Beijing.
He graduated with a BS in physics in 1960 at National Taiwan University (NTU), an MS in physics at National Tsing Hua University (Hsinchu) in 1962, and earned a Ph.D. in physics in 1968 at Harvard University, under the supervision of Julian Schwinger.
