After the war she moved to Britain where she was active as a socialist against fascists in East London and worked as a teacher who was active in the National Union of Teachers.
In 2009 Millar received the Fred and Anne Jarvis Award from the National Union of Teachers for her campaigning for good quality local comprehensive schools as against academies.
After qualifying as a teacher in her native Leeds Mary became a socialist and was active in the local branch of the National Union of Teachers.
The last private owner, a Mrs Andrews, died in 1935 and it stood empty until September 1939, when it was purchased by the National Union of Teachers, who had moved out of London to avoid air raids.
As well as authoring many articles on social questions for the groups' publications, she was an activist in the National Union of Teachers until her retirement.
