Author Nelson Algren included a variation of the message in his 1983 book, The Devil's Stocking, a fictionalized account of the trial of Rubin Carter, a real-life prize-fighter who had been found guilty of double murder.

"Frankie Machine" is the name of the card-dealing, heroin-addicted protagonist in Nelson Algren's 1949 novel, The Man With the Golden Arm, a role played by Frank Sinatra in the 1955 film directed by Otto Preminger.

Notable past and current residents include Nelson Algren, who lived on the third floor at 1958 W.
