His second son, William Cowper Alexander (1806–1874) served as president of the New Jersey State Senate and as the first president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society.
He was elected to the New Jersey State Senate in 1963, defeating Democrat Elmer Matthews, the sitting Assembly Speaker, and George Richardson, a Democratic Assemblyman running as an Independent.
His younger brothers included William Cowper Alexander (1806-1874), president of the New Jersey State Senate and first president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, and Joseph Addison Alexander (1809-1860), a biblical scholar.
The transit center opened on March 15, 2004 and named for Walter Rand, a former New Jersey State Senator, who specialized in transportation issues while serving in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature.
