He was appointed colonel of the Thirty-Sixth Regiment, New York National Guard, in 1867, and resigned to accept the position of United States consul at Toronto, Canada, in 1868.
Along with George Augustus Vaughn, Jr. and Howard Burdick, he helped form the 102nd Observation Squadron of the New York National Guard; it was the Guard's first air unit.
In 1952 a New York National Guard training area in Wethersfield, New York was dedicated in his honor, Camp O'Ryan.
