Opened in 1895, designed by James Hicks of Redruth and financed by John Passmore Edwards the gallery was conceived as a home and exhibition venue for the Newlyn School of Art the works of which are now largely located at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in nearby Penzance.
His style was similar to that of the 'plein-air' painters of the Newlyn School, which included Alexander Stanhope Forbes and his wife Elizabeth Armstrong.
Newlyn School of Art is a not-for-profit educational organisation based in West Cornwall offering short art courses and mentoring by way of professional development for artists.
