He is married to Cheryl Amana-Burris, his third wife, a law professor at North Carolina Central University.

The NCBioImpact partnership now includes BTEC, BRITE (Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise) at North Carolina Central University, North Carolina BioNetwork of the North Carolina Community College System, NCBIO (North Carolina Biosciences Organization), the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and the Golden LEAF Foundation.

She was also a proud and contributing alum of the first publicly funded historically Black college in the nation, North Carolina Central University and was inducted into the university's Golden Eagle Society in 2003.
