It was a merger of the urban district of Filey and part of the Bridlington Rural District, from the historic East Riding of Yorkshire, along with the municipal borough of Scarborough, Scalby and Whitby urban districts, and Scarborough Rural District and Whitby Rural District, from the historic North Riding.
Mrs Edna Crow, Stone House Farm of North Riding, sued Mr Robin Wood, or Wether Cote Farm, Hawnby, for his sheep straying into her land, alleging cattle trespass.
In some counties there were multiple Quarter Sessions, quite apart from the urban areas: for example, Yorkshire had its North Riding, West Riding, and East Riding; whilst Northamptonshire's Soke of Peterborough was administered separately.
Sir Timothy Kitson, Member of Parliament for the Yorkshire constituency of Richmond, set out the losses to the North Riding: the administrative county was to lose about 25% of its population (reduced from about 428,000 to 318,000), and about 40% of its rateable value (down from £15.8 to £9.3 million).
The opportunity was taken to rename Tipperary (North Riding) and Tipperary (South Riding) as North Tipperary and South Tipperary respectively.

The first squadron to occupy the new airfield were No. 608, who were formed here as No. 608 County of York (North Riding) squadron on 17 March 1930, under the command of a Flying Instructor, Squadron Leader William Howard-Davies, and operating Westland Wapitis and Avro 504Ns.
In 1968 his position was High Sheriff of Yorkshire and in 1973 Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the North Riding, Yorkshire.
