Born in Oakland, California, Handy attended North Texas State University from 1981 to 1984, and following this played with Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Haynes, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, George Adams, Ray Drummond, Conrad Herwig, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and David Weiss among many others.
The album beat out recordings in Down Beat from heavy-weight groups at large universities such as North Texas State University's Grammy nominated One O'Clock Lab Band, the University of Miami's Concert Jazz Band, and the Eastman School of Music's Jazz Orchestra.
He was joined by North Texas State University colleagues Eric Van Stryland and David Hagan.
