During the September 11 attacks, Pitino lost Bill Minardi, his brother-in-law, who was working on the 105th floor of the North Tower for Cantor Fitzgerald on the morning of the attacks.
When the North Tower was struck by Flight 11, Praimnath started to evacuate from his 81st floor office in the South Tower, but returned when the building's security guards told everyone that the South Tower was secure, and that they should return to their office.

The original Palace Pier Tower (North Tower) was completed in 1978.
Later, it was moved to the top of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, but it was destroyed as a result of the September 11 attacks in 2001.
