16 physicians elected by their peers on a geographical basis every three years; 3 physicians appointed from among the six faculties of medicine (at the University of Western Ontario, McMaster University, University of Toronto, Queen's University, University of Ottawa, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine); no fewer than 13 and no more than 15 non-physician or 'public' members appointed by the provincial government for terms decided by the government.
She has been the executive director of the Community Health Centre of Sudbury, is on the United Way's Citizens' Advisory Panel, and serves as president of the Francophone Reference Group of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
In honor of her commitment, through the endowment of scholarships and bursaries of over 1 million dollars for students at the Lakehead University campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, (NOSM), the facility which houses the West Campus of the NOSM Health Sciences Library is now called the Dr. Serafina "Penny" Petrone Health Information Resource Centre.
