The line runs on the tracks of the Northern Railway of Canada, along the original route of the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railway before that was extended far to the north in later years.

In 1852, construction began on the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railway, which would run from Toronto to Collingwood.
In 1861 the Northern Railway ran a rail line to the south of Davenport Rd and built a station in the area which they named Davenport.
The first railway, Ontario, Simcoe and Huron (OS&H) arrived in Toronto in 1853 with a station located near the current Union Station.
