Usta has spent the majority of his career in the Netherlands - also playing for Cambuur, Sparta and MVV - apart from brief spells in Turkey with Beşiktaş, in Finland with Jokerit, and in Japan with Omiya Ardija.
In January 2001, Omiya Ardija sent Kawashima overseas to train with Parma F.C. in the Serie A league in Italy.
