The book’s reputation came only in the 1960s, when the Monthly Review Press reprinted it in paperback with a sympathetic introduction by Owen Lattimore.
Owen Lattimore (1900-1989), eminent American scholar of Mongolia and China, and Central Asia generally, lived in the village for a time during the 1960s while he was the first Professor of Chinese at the University of Leeds.
In 1953, Youngdahl dismissed perjury charges against Owen Lattimore, a professor who had been charged with lying before a Senate Committee when he testified that he was unsympathetic to Communism.
