Owing to the influence of his friend, the Master of Gray, he returned on a safe-conduct to Scotland, arriving in Edinburgh on 15 April 1586.

He married Jane Gray (daughter of Patrick Gray and Elizabeth Lyon) and was succeeded by his only son, David, the second Earl.
Sir Patrick Gray, Maclellan’s uncle, held a high office at the Court, and so was able to obtain a letter from the King requiring the earl of Douglas to release his prisoner.
