It was named in 1992 by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Patrick R. Haggerty of Holmes and Narver, Inc., who managed logistics and construction activities at McMurdo Station, South Pole Station, Siple Station and various field camps during the 1970s and 1990s.
The construction of the museum was made possible by a donation from alumnus and co-founder of Texas Instruments, Inc., Patrick E. Haggerty, and his wife, Beatrice, for whom the museum is named.
Haggerty and his wife left part of their estate to found a museum of art at his alma mater which lead to the founding of the Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art.
On June 22, 2004, McCaffrey was on a patrol with Iraqi Security Forces and the Platoon's LT. when the two U.S. soldiers were killed, initially thought to be Iraqi insurgents in an ambush near Balad, Iraq.
