The casino was originally named Argosy Casino, and was operated by Argosy Gaming Company, which was taken over in 2004 by Penn National Gaming, which operated casinos under the Hollywood brand.
In October 2010, Penn National Gaming bought the resort's $860 million in debt from the Bank of Scotland for $231 million.

Penn National Gaming rebuilt the casino under its Hollywood Casino brand as Hollywood Casino Joliet, the Egyptian theme was mostly removed and replaced with 1920's-1930's art deco.
The Johnstown, Pennsylvania location was later sold to the Penn National Gaming corporation in July 1998.
