As a very fruitful author, Grisman issued albums with his own groups David Grisman Quintet and Old and in the Way, performed in various duo collaborations with Jerry Garcia, Andy Statman, Martin Taylor, John Sebastian, Tony Rice, played in psychedelic band Earth Opera with Peter Rowan, produced a number of solo records and cooperated with many other artists in different genres.
The band, along with Kahn, featured Garcia on banjo and vocals, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals, Richard Greene and Vassar Clements on fiddle.
He created a role in the Bluegrass Boys later filled by the likes of Jimmy Martin, Mac Wiseman, Peter Rowan and Del McCoury.
The band's reputation was such that many visiting U.S. musicians would jam on stage with them, Bluegrass legends like Peter Rowan, Tex Logan and Kenny Baker.
