The City of Genoa agreed to the appointment of Philip of Cleves, a cousin of King Louis XII, as the new governor of Genoa.
Philippe Monsieur, as he was called, married in 1485 Francisca of Luxemburg (1523), daughter of Peter II, Count of Saint-Pol, Lord of Enghien.
In 1489 he was one of those lords who tried to reason with Philip of Cleves during his rebellion against Maximilian of Austria.
