She attended a strict mission boarding school in 1961 but hated it and was able to transfer to Phoenix Indian School, then the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1962, the year the school opened.

Parker McKenzie (1897–1999) and his wife Nettie Odlety McKenzie (1896–1978) purchased cameras and took photographs while they attended Phoenix Indian School in 1916.
