unusual facts about Pitt Rivers Museum

Farnham, Dorset

Following his donation of some 20,000 antiquities to the University of Oxford in 1884, forming the nucleus of the Pitt Rivers Museum, he continued to collect archaeological and ethnological specimens for his personal collection at Tollard Farnham, about a half-mile from Farnham village centre.

Oxford and Cambridge Expedition to South America

Ethnographic items collected during the Expeidition were donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford by Peter Rivière on behalf of the Expedition.

Richard Rigby

Though other members of the family continued to bear the Rigby name and arms, the bulk of Richard Rigby's wealth fell to his sister who married General Hale, and ultimately to the Pitt-Rivers family, whose members endowed the museum of that name, a treasurehouse of anthropological exotica, at Oxford University.
