The General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, officially General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, is the highest ranking official within the Communist Party of China, a standing member of the Politburo and head of the Secretariat.
He was elected to be a member of the Politburo Standing Committee at the 17th Party Congress, heading up the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, in charge of stamping out corruption with party officials, replacing Wu Guanzheng.
Liu Yunshan, Member of the 18th CPC Politburo Standing Committee and First Secretary of the Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of China, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.
However, Hu was much less fortunate than Qiao Shi, the other member of the CPC Politburo Standing Committee who opposed the use of force by not voting: unlike Qiao Shi who retained his post, Hu was then kicked out from the Politburo Standing Committee after the fall of general secretary Zhao Ziyang.
The Commission is headed by General Secretary Xi Jinping (also President) with Politburo Standing Committee members Li Keqiang (also Premier) and Zhang Dejiang (also Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee) as deputies.
