Besides his own band, the Wolfgang Muthspiel 4tet, he is collaborating with Brian Blade in the project "Friendly Travelers" and with Ralph Towner and Slava Grigoryan in a new Guitar Trio named MGT.

Burton has played with a wide variety of jazz musicians, including Carla Bley, Hank Garland, Gato Barbieri, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Steve Lacy, Pat Metheny, Makoto Ozone, Tiger Okoshi, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, B.B. King, Tommy Smith, Eberhard Weber, Ralph Towner, Peter Erskine, Stephane Grappelli and Ástor Piazzolla.
Since the 1980s she has been active on the jazz scene as a singer, performing and collaborating with, among others, Huw Warren, Kenny Wheeler, Ralph Towner, Joe Zawinul, Michael Brecker, Steve Turre, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
