The name Hajo comes from a legendary king Hajo the Koch, an ancestor of the Koch dynasty, who ruled over the Rangpur district in present-day Bangladesh and some regions of Assam.
This was one of the reasons that caused distress leading to violence, especially in Natore in Rangpur, now in modern Bangladesh.

Regionwise, in the northwest of Bangladesh some of the larger beels are Bara Beel in Pirganj, Tagrai Beel in Kurigram, Lunipukur in Rangpur, Bara Mirzapur Beel in Narail and Keshpathar in Bogra.
After originating in West Bengal, it passes through Panchagarh District, Pirganj in Rangpur District, Bochaganj in Rajshahi District and Biral in Dinajpur District in Bangladesh before it flows through Kushmandi and Bansihari community development blocks of Dakshin Dinajpur district in West Bengal.
