The remains were collected from the Neill's Ranch site, along the Red Deer River in Alberta by a 1923 expedition from the University of Toronto.
Well-known paleontologist Barnum Brown recovered a duckbill skull in 1915 for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH 5836) from the Red Deer River of Alberta, near Steveville.
It is found in only three colonies in the southern prairie provinces of Canada, the Spirit Dunes at Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Manitoba, the Burstall dunes in south-western Saskatchewan, and in a small dune complex in the Red Deer River valley north of Bindloss.

Gryposaurus is based on specimen NMC 2278, a skull and partial skeleton collected in 1913 by George F. Sternberg from what is now known as the Dinosaur Park Formation of Alberta, along the Red Deer River.
