Russell decides to move to New York in the early seventies, where he starts working as the musical director of the Kitchen and becomes part of the downtown scene of artists, sharing an apartment building with Allen Ginsburg and Richard Hell.

The band was managed by future Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, who wanted to create a band with the musical sound of The Ramones and the style of former Television member Richard Hell, both of whom he had seen perform at CBGB.
While studying on an Australia Council Scholarship at the New York Studio School, New York, Sumberg lived in the Hotel Chelsea and became acquainted with and befriended notable musicians and performers such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Johnny Rotten, Richard Hell and filmmaker Luis Buñuel.
