The name of the village signifies the "Abbot's broad ford" on the River Ivel, the abbot in question being that of Sherborne; the land was given to Sherborne Abbey by King Alfred the Great.
Most of Lower Caldecote is situated directly to the west of the A1 road, though one farm and a sand and gravel extraction site lie on the eastern side of the A1 extending to the River Ivel.

Ilchester was a Roman garrison town, built at the point where the Fosse Way crossed the River Ivel, and there is evidence that the Romans built quays on the river.
