The Roman town of Cunetio, located across the River Kennet from the modern town of Mildenhall, Wiltshire, was occupied from the 2nd century AD until the end of the Roman period, early 5th century, when it was apparently abandoned.
The river was named by surveyor George Smythe after the River Kennet in Berkshire, England
Pearson discovered that he had to rework much of the earlier construction, including excavating 60,000 cu yd of spoil in supposedly finished cuttings, and piling the River Kennet bridge and rectifying problems on several other bridges.

Burbage stands on a watershed at the eastern end of the Vale of Pewsey, with streams to the east draining to the Thames via the Dun and Kennet; to the south draining to the Salisbury Avon via the River Bourne, and to the north and west into the Salisbury Avon itself.
The Og, a tributary of the River Kennet (itself a tributary of the Thames), flows for about half of the year down the centre of the hamlet forcing the road into a sharp hairpin bend.
To the South, and running West to East, flows The Teg, which joins the Foudry Brook to the East of the Hamlet, which itself continues North towards the River Kennet South of Reading
The land descends towards the east into the London Basin and along the main river valleys to the low-lying areas of the Kennet floodplain and lower reaches of the Loddon and Blackwater.
Geographically, it is relatively flat and has the River Kennet, a tributary of the River Lark locally known as the Lee Brook, cutting through the centre of the village.
