unusual facts about River Lune



Barbon

Barbon Beck flows through, and takes its name from, the village before flowing into the River Lune.

Escowbeck

It is situated overlooking the Crook of Lune south of the road from Lancaster to Caton and Hornby, near where the Escow Beck from which it takes its name, flows into the River Lune.

Grayrigg Forest

From near the summit, there are impressive views down into the gorge of the Lune valley, where road, West Coast Main Line railway, M6 motorway and River Lune crowd between the outliers of the Lake District and the Howgill Fells.

Lancaster Green Ayre railway station

The station was on the southern bank of the River Lune, adjacent to Skerton Bridge and immediately to the north of the city centre.

Lancaster University Boat Club

The club is based in the old Halton railway station and trains on the River Lune, north of Lancaster.

Smardale

Smardalegill is a small steep sided valley connecting Smardale and the valley of the River Eden with the eastern end of the valley of the River Lune, Scandal beck runs north-northeast through it, as does the former Stainmore Railway.

Under the Water Act 1973, ownership of the TVCWB's reservoirs, which included the three Baldersdale reservoirs and two others — Selset and Grassholme — on the River Lune a short distance to the north, was transferred to the Northumbrian Water Authority (NWA).
