The Town Centre ward has the River Ribble and Frenchwood at its southern base, moving through in a northerly direction through Avenham, the city centre, and to the borders of the UCLaN campus.
In 1638 Holmes, with his wife and possibly son Jonathan, sailed from Preston on the River Ribble in Lancashire to Boston in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The ward is in the southeast of the city, curving along the route of the Ribble from Broadgate to the docklands, where the river eventually meets the Fylde coast, and ultimately the Irish Sea.

The ward is named for its location close to the River Ribble, and the historical links to the former Port of Preston.
The River Ribble runs through Preston from North Yorkshire and the estuary enters into the Irish Sea near Lytham, and used to transport ships from the cotton mills.
