In the thirteenth century Ralph de Ecclesall gave his mill on the River Sheaf to the monks of Beauchief Abbey.
When first built the mansion stood in a rural situation within sight of the centre of Sheffield, surrounded by farmland at the top of a slight gradient overlooking the valley of the River Sheaf.
These ponds, which formed in the area where the Porter Brook meets the River Sheaf, are now gone, but are commemorated in the local names Pond Street, Pond Hill (formerly Pond Well Hill) and Ponds Forge.
It is named after the River Sheaf, which flows from the south of the city, underneath the current station and into the River Don and Castlegate.
