7 unusual facts about River Taw

Fremington, Devon

The quay now has been redeveloped with a restaurant and facilities to enjoy wide views over the Taw estuary.

Geographically, the centre of the village is approximately a mile (2 km) south of its quay, a historic wharf situated on the southern bank of the River Taw with plenty of residential property on all sides of its roads between Bideford and Barnstaple.

Taw locomotive

Taw, like all the locomotives on the L&B, was named after the River Taw, a local river with a three-letter name.

Tawstock

The principal east front, with crenallated parapet and two end turrets, faces towards St Peter's Parish Church and has a magnificent view across the River Taw to Bishops Tawton village and Codden Hill.

Yelland

Since its construction, thousands of years ago, the site has been smothered by silt from the widening of the River Taw.

Yelland Stone Rows

The stone row constitutes one of the most important megaliths in the British Isles due to its location in the intertidal zone of the River Taw and cannot be matched anywhere else in the British Isles with the possible exception of two stones located in the intertidal zone at Er Lannic, Brittany, although these cannot be reliably identified as belonging to a stone row.

The Yelland Stone Row is a double row of stones next to the River Taw near the village of Yelland, in Devon, England.
