Abbotsham once had its own railway station at Abbotsham Road on the Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway, which was built entirely on this peninsula with no direct connection across the River Torridge to the British railway network.
The parish, which lies about six miles east of the town of Holsworthy has part of its eastern boundary formed by the River Torridge, and it is surrounded clockwise from the north by the parishes of Milton Damerel, Shebbear, Black Torrington, Ashwater, Cookbury and Thornbury.
The Stevens family later built Cross House, in the parish of Little Torrington, a large Georgian mansion situated on top of the hill across the River Torridge valley from Great Torrington Castle Hill.
The western boundary of the parish is formed by the River Torridge and the land rises from the river to over 200 m.
The eastern and northern boundaries of the parish follow the loops of the River Torridge and the other sides are defined by the River Mere.
It’s profile is, appropriately, that of an acorn whose western border follows the River Torridge.
